Hand Therapy

The intricate anatomy of the hand and arm, combined with the technical complexity of newer surgical procedures performed on the hand and arm necessitated a high level of competency and advanced knowledge and skills for successful outcomes.

Hand surgeons took to the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) to ensure the best results after hand surgery.

Insurance companies look to the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) to ensure their clients that they are receiving care from the most qualified individuals in the field.

Smart consumers look to the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT)

for their care because they know that professional credentials matter. They want to know that qualified people are handling their care.

Hand Therapy Certification is a credentialing program by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC), to certify physical and occupational therapists in the advanced clinical specialty of upper extremity rehabilitation.

The credentials "CHT" distinguish a physical or occupational therapist as someone who has had:

•   At least 5 years clinical experience

•   2000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy

•   Successfully completed a comprehensive test of advanced skills and theory in upper extremity rehabilitation.

Certification is granted for a five-year period, at which time a therapist must recertify by examination or with work experience and continuing education. HTCC provides a recertification program to ensure that individuals maintain clinical competence once initially certified.

Becoming a CHT distinguishes a physical/occupational therapist as someone with the highest professional credential in the specialty of hand therapy. Earning the credentials shows that you set high professional standards for yourself and have met the high standards set by experts in the field of hand therapy. The CHT credentials are recognized and valued by many professional organizations, including The American Society of Hand Therapists, The American Society for Surgery of the Hand, The American Occupations Therapy Association and The American Physical Therapy Association.
